Steven did not graduate from a prestigious design school and had never thought of studying fashion design for most of his life. He originally intended to study English literature and drama, but the day before going to university, a sudden intuition popped into his mind, ultimately changing his mind. During his time at school, he was inspired and went on to establish his own eponymous brand, S.S. Delay, in 2020, reinterpreting traditional men's clothing silhouettes with a playful and cute approach.

What made S.S. Delay popular was when pop superstar Harry Styles released his music video "Golden" after a long absence. The MV, which was filmed on the Amalfi Coast in Italy and exuded a strong atmosphere of a summer vacation, quickly attracted millions of views on YouTube shortly after its release. The two core items in the video, the Sebastian trousers and Hall Tennant shirt, were personally selected by stylist Harry Lambert and both came from Steven Stokey-Daley's personal brand, S.S. Daley.
