With clothing as the carrier, the exploration and Shouting of black culture

07/07/2023

Grace Wales Bonner is a designer born in the 90s. She was born in London to an English mother and a Jamaican father. Having loved art and history since childhood, she is full of imagination for her future. The multicultural backgrounds of the students at St. Martin's inspired Grace Welsh Bonner. She wants to create beautiful clothes in a subversive way, and at the same time hide powerful messages in them. In a sense, Grace Wales Bonner's work is deeply personal.

It's about her family, her friends and the bits and pieces of life she's experienced. Because it's personal, people who have had similar experiences can relate to it. Therefore, the process of studying in St. Martin's is also the process of her trying to find her own identity. From the beginning of college graduation, her life is like a hang up, along the way numerous awards, become a dazzling new star. In 2014, when she graduated from St. Martin's College of Art and Design, her graduation work won the L 'Oreal Professional Talent Award. The following year, she founded the eponymous WALES BONNER, hoping to explore a unique luxury brand rich in black cultural DNA.

She skillfully incorporates elements of critical theory, history and literature into her clothing creations, using her own dual cultural identity as a starting point to explore social issues between Europe and Africa, and the fragmented bonds of European and African cultural mixing are a recurring theme in her designs. Her work has long presented a tour of black cultural perspectives. As she says, "I'm thinking about how people can create a language for themselves in certain Spaces." Her brand was founded with the aim of breaking away from the traditional luxury perspective and repositioning itself within what has always been a single Eurocentrism.
