The Sunscreen You'll Actually Want To Reapply Every 2 Hours

20/07/2023

Confession: I tend to royally suck at re-applying my sunscreen every two hours, as dermatologists recommend. But one thing that's helped me get a lot better at it is Brush On Block's Mineral Powder Sunscreen, a brush-dispensed mineral sunscreen powder. Its formula has an SPF of 50, meaning it blocks 98% of UVA and UVB rays.

I love that the slim brush fits easily into my handbags, including my small shoulder bag, making it a no-brainer to keep in tow. I usually apply a liquid sunscreen, like Kosas DreamBeam, first thing in the morning, so following it up with a powder sunscreen serves dual purposes: reapplication and minimizing my skin's oiliness and shine that may have cropped up later in the day

Application couldn't be quicker: I can dust it over my skin and go on with my life, without worrying about if it left a white cast or weird streaks, or messed up my makeup.Using this correctly and working it into your routine takes some finesse, though, and experts have noted that powder and makeup-based sunscreens can have some user error. Often, we don't use enough of the product to provide the full coverage listed on the label.

Some of my tips for using this brush-on formula: To apply it, take off the cap and twist the container to let the powder flow through the brush. To check if it's actually dispensing, flick your wrist and see if any powder puffs out — if you can see it, that means the brush is open and properly dispensing. Then, when reapplying, it might be hard to know if there's enough coverage in a spot since the product is virtually invisible. I like to judge the level of coverage I'm getting by noting the change in my skin's texture: If there's a matte, almost suede-like, smooth finish, that means there's product sitting on the skin. (This is by no means a scientifically sanctioned approach, so it still doesn't guarantee perfect coverage, but it's certainly better than forgoing sunscreen reapplication altogether!)

I'm still not perfect at reapplying every two hours, but this brush makes it a whole lot easier. I've shamelessly whipped it out in the park, privately in the bathroom and walking down the middle of a shady street. It'll be coming with me everywhere I go this summer.
